Bee Day Itinerary

Posted by Megan Plassmeyer on February 17, 2016 at 1:01 PM

This year Bee Day will operate differently than in past years in order to accommodate a more diverse audience of advocates and to showcase the range of advocacy activities available to connect constituents with their elected officials.  In many ways, this will resemble an “advocacy fair” with many tables and opportunities to get involved depending on your comfort and time restraints.

Our itinerary is as follows:

9:00 am: Bee Day registration and advocacy begins at Marriott Columbia's Capital ballroom III - IV. (1200 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC).  Continental breakfast and coffee will be provided.

Participants will have an opportunity to practice a robust advocacy regimen at 5 stations including:

  • Emailing your legislator: learn about the best practices for contacting your legislator via email and send your lawmaker an email on the spot.
  • Tweeting your legislator: Is your elected official on social media? Find out this and the best way to interact with lawmakers over social media at this booth.
  • Calling your legislator: What is it like to talk with you legislator on the phone? What should you say? We’ll train and connect you to your elected official straight away at this booth.
  • Writing your legislator a letter: How do you write a letter that gets noticed by your lawmaker? We have just the advice and tools to get you on your way.
  • Meeting your legislator face-to-face: Learn how to advocate for women’s rights to your legislator and put these skills into practice.  At this table you’ll learn best practices for one-on-ones with your lawmaker and you can shuttle over to the State House with an experience advocate and a small group to talk with your legislator.

Intermingled with the advocacy tables will be partner tables where advocates can learn about impactful, diverse organizations that are advancing the health, economic well-being and rights of South Carolina women, girls and their families.

These tables will run throughout Bee Day from 9am-3pm.

11:00 am: Press conference on the first floor lobby of the State House (shuttles will be provided from the Marriott Columbia to the State House beginning at 10:30am)

11:30 am: Introductions in the House chambers

12:00 pm: Pictures on the State House steps

12:30 pm: lunch with legislators at Marriott Columbia

1:30 pm-3:00 pm: Bee Day advocacy continues at the Marriott Columbia with shuttles to and from the State House to meet your legislator.
