Modern Day Vampire

Last year we killed “personhood” bills. And then they came back.

Come to think of it, the year before we killed “personhood” legislation, and it came back.

And the year before, and the year before, and the year before for 18 years.

How can it be that for eighteen consecutive years, so-called personhood legislation—legislation that aims to seek full legal rights to fertilized eggs BEFORE pregnancy occurs—hasn’t fully, completely died?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a modern day vampire in “personhood” legislation.

Here are some scary scenarios that could become a reality if we let a piece of "personhood" legislation pass:

  • With “personhood” legislation, anything that puts a fertilized egg at risk – like surplus eggs involved in the IVF process—could be a criminal act.  This would force changes to IVF that render the procedure less effective, and ultimately futile to the patient. By defining life at fertilization, this bill would call into question the legality of many fertility treatment methods and restrict doctors’ abilities to act in their patients’ best interests.
  • The most widely used forms of contraception like the pill and IUDs would be banned because hormonal contraceptives work BEFORE the fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus.

But it’s not all a list of what could happen.  Personhood statutes are already having callous, repressive effects on pregnant women across our nation. Take a moment – if you dare! – to watch this four minute video sharing the stories of women and their families from around the country who have been hurt by “personhood” restrictions.

But as we’ve learned from well-spent "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" tv marathons, there’s always hope, there’s always a way to defeat the seemingly undefeatable.

“Strong is fighting. It’s hard and it’s painful and it’s every day. It’s what we have to do, and we can do it together.”
